What this site collects.
A plain-language summary of what's collected and why. Tong Nie is the data controller — reach him at ethan.nie2020@gmail.com.
What's collected
- Anonymous analytics (every page): the page path, the referrer, your country (a 2-letter code from the network edge), a coarse device type (mobile or desktop), and a one-way salted hash of your IP address. Also how long the page was visibly open, how far down the page you scrolled, whether your browser declares itself automated, and — if you followed a tagged link, such as the one on Tong's CV — which link that was. Automated crawlers that identify themselves (GPTBot, Googlebot and the like) are recorded by that name. The raw IP and your full user-agent are never stored.
- Chat logs (only if you use the assistant): the messages you send and the assistant's replies, the same hashed-IP / country / device, which section you opened the chat from, the intent you optionally pick (Hiring, Technical, or Just curious), and the model and provider that answered. By chatting you agree this may be saved to improve the assistant; you can object at any time (see Your rights).
The assistant is an AI. It answers from a curated summary of Tong's work and can still be wrong or incomplete — treat its replies as a starting point, not a source of record.
Why
Analytics help Tong see which work resonates. Chat logs let him review the real questions people ask and improve the assistant's answers. The lawful basis is legitimate interest; the data is minimised (hashed IP, no name required) and you can object at any time.
How long it's kept
Logs are kept no longer than needed to review and improve the assistant, and are deleted on request. Email ethan.nie2020@gmail.com with roughly when you visited and your data will be removed.
Your rights
You can turn chat logging off yourself: the Don’t log switch sits in the assistant’s header, next to the link that brought you here. With it on, nothing from that conversation is saved — no session row, no messages. The choice is remembered in your browser.
You can also request access to, or deletion of, your data, and you can object to the chat logging by email. Write to ethan.nie2020@gmail.com and reference roughly when you visited.
Who processes the data
- AI model provider — Anthropic (United States) or DeepSeek (China), depending on how the assistant is configured — receives your chat messages to generate replies.
- Database (Supabase): stores the analytics and chat logs.
- Host (Vercel): serves the site and runs the functions.
These are data processors acting on Tong's behalf. Some processing happens outside the EU under appropriate safeguards. Fonts are self-hosted, so no third-party font service sees your visit.
